A few of the female members of our team traveled over to the the Warren Newport Public Library to conduct a social experiment for our program Girls in Engineering (GIE). The goal of GIE is to help inform young girls about STEM Education and provide resources for them to expand their interest in STEM.
In this experiment, we brought around a cardboard cutout of a female and asked library patrons what her career was. The woman was an electrical engineer, but many of the patrons did not guess this career. We received answers such as a hostess, a flight attendant, or a secretary. The most popular answer was teacher. Many of these people were very surprised that their guess was incorrect.
We will be using these interviews in an upcoming video. Stay tuned!
